Tales from the bass side...

December 10, 2009

Recently, we ventured into Elephant & Castle, a part of south east London famous for it's University, rough demeanor and hosting the ministry of sound club nights. We were there, though, to see what ended up being one of the greatest dj sets we've seen. The night was a promotion for Subloaded's fifth birthday, featuring Headhunter, Appleblim b2b Peverelist, Youngsta and Silkie b2b Quest. It was held at the fitting corsica studios, fitting because it's kinda dingy and small with big subwoofers, perfect for dubstep. We stuck it out to the end, a nice 5.30 am bus home, but definitely worth it. A lot of dj's we see now are using some sort of digital mixing tool, Serato seems to be most popular, it was nice to see that not every dj needs to rely on this system, Silkie and Quest used cd decks and I believe Youngsta stuck to his dub plate vinyl records.
I mention this because, the as -yet-unnamed collective of dj's that I'm part of as Melo (also featuring T4X, Leg4ndry and Groovekiller), have always mixed with vinyl, we see it as an important part of the dubstep scene, sticking to the way it was when dubstep was this exciting new thing and dj's only had white-label dub plates to play with.
Our as-yet-unnamed dj collective have recently gotten our first residency at a club called the Dirty South in Lewisham, south east London, starting in January and should hopefully have some live recordings for future shows. More soon..
