Ok this time around I wanna look at "Genesis" Now today when we think of Genesis we will think of the very main stream trio of Phil Collins, Mike Rutherford and Tony Banks...But in the beginning ( pun intended ) Genesis was very alternative and alot of that came from its original lead singer Peter Gabriel.
Genesis formed in the late 60's by Gabriel and Banks, did not feature Phil Collins on drums...Collins' emerged as drummer in 1970 .
When they began Genesis was known for their alternative sound and they're look! With Gabriel's lead the group often would dress in theatrical costumes ...sometimes appearing to look like a group from the 19th Century instead of the 20th .
The groups first album was "From Genesis to Revelation" in 1969 ....
Foxtrot came out in 1972 and was the Band's breakthrough album with two hits "Watcher of the Skies" and "Supper's Ready" becoming fan favorites in concert. Like Genesis liked to do and a thing of the times , "Supper's Ready" was about 23 minutes long ( Much like Pink Floyd and Yes ) and featured ( 7 ) chapters with-in the song ... It helped give Genesis their distinct sound, which as mentioned was coupled with Peter Gabriel's love for the dramatic stage show .
For me this type of song writing made early Genesis "Alternative" and intriguing to listen to...given you allow yourself time ! lol
Selling England By The Pound came out in 1973 and featured a "Medievil England" theme and was well received including the tune ("Dancing With the Moonlit Knight")
Peter Gabriel in costume as the " Moonlight Knight "
Early Genesis saw its peak in 1974 with "The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway" The album tells the surreal story of a juvenile delinquent named Rael living in New York City, who is swept underground to face bizarre creatures and nightmarish dangers in order to rescue his brother John. Several of the story's occurrences and places were derived from Peter Gabriel's dreams, and the protagonist's name is a play on his surname. In an interview Phil Collins remarked, "It's about a split personality" It would be Gabriel's last album with Genesis
Following Gabriel's departure Genesis continued , however slowly becoming more structured and refined...and less alternative, however dont get me wrong still a totally strong group and sound right up til today!
Do yourself a favor and download some vintage Genesis from the early to mid 70's , give yourself time to listen , and let Genesis take you for a ride ! A great weekend treat!
Midnight Oil...or the "Oils" as they are known in native Australia.... to me were the rougher version of INXS, with the quirky Peter Garret on lead vocals and a "politcal agenda" under their sound...they were the alter ego to then popular INXS.
Funny thing about Midnight Oil though is their relatively small time on the American scene . Their Biggest Album " Diesel & Dust " came out in 1985 ( Featuring the big hit "Beds are Burning" ) , But they had 7 albums before that !
" Diesel & Dust is classic Oil ! and their most successful album, however they had 5 albums after that.
What I found always best about Mindnight Oil was their "Politcal" edge. They were more like a bunch of "Greenpeace" memebers....who could happen to play music, then a bunch of rock and roll stars. Thanks to them alil awareness of our planet and its problems were brought up in the 80's .....
However the true "Spirit, Image & Sound" of the band in my opinion was Peter Garrett and when he departed in 2002 ... so went Midnight Oil !
Ok time for another "Classic Piece" ..... George, Paul, John & Ringo...I thought we'd examine Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band. The album many say may be the best album rock production ever! A work I think set the stage for all "Alternative" productions. Without Sgt Pepper, who knows what the music scene would be like today.
The album was a "concept" piece which the Beatles used to explore new alternative thoughts, sounds and production techniques .... definately something the music world hadn't really seen to date , when the album was released in 1967.
This album was completely "alternative" in its day ..... the concept behind it, was that they decided to create fictitious characters for each band member and record an album that would be a performance by that fictitious band. This "alter-ego group" gave the Beatles the freedom to experiment with songs.
The Beatles also used different recording and production techniques....the recording made extensive use of the technique known as bouncing down (also called reduction mixes), in which a number of tracks were recorded across the four tracks of one recorder, which were then mixed and dubbed down onto one track of the master four-track machine. This enabled the Abbey Road engineers to give the Beatles a virtual multi-track studio. They also used new modular effects units like the wah-wah pedal and fuzzbox, which they augmented with their own experimental ideas, such as running voices and instruments through a Leslie Speaker...which is a amplifier/loudspeaker. They also used several other techniques to give the album a sounf texture and quality unlike anything of its time.
It's hard to argue what is the best song on the album because you need all the parts to experience the journey. The Beatles basically created the first ever "Rock Opera" with the story of the "Sgt. Peppers Band" .... but some may argue the closing track " A Day In The Life " as the jewel of the piece. Paul Grushkin in his book Rockin' Down the Highway: The Cars and People That Made Rock Roll, called the song "one of the most ambitious, influential, and groundbreaking works in pop music history".
In "From Craft to Art: Formal Structure in the Music of the Beatles", the song is described thus: "A Day in the Life" is perhaps one of the most important single tracks in the history of rock music; clocking in at only four minutes and forty-five seconds, it must surely be among the shortest epic pieces in rock.
I'll go on record as saying I believe the Beatles are the best ever rock band , although some may argue, and Sgt Pepper took the Band to new heights and made it possible for "rock" music to be "alternative" to take the music and turn it into pictures, visual and a story. Seperating it from earlier recordings in which "rock" music was a compilation of singles, which meant nothing to the end product...Sgt Peppers made the product a whole!
Interesting Sgt Pepper Side Notes....
Sadly the Beatles never performed the entire Sgt Peppers album live .....
John Lennon's song "Being for the benefit of Mr. Kite", The lyrics were adapted almost word for word from an old circus poster which Lennon had bought at an antique shop in Kent the day the Beatles had been filming the promotional clip for Strawberry Fields Forever there....
The thunderous piano chord that dramatically concludes "A Day in the Life", and the album, was produced by assembling three grand pianos in the studio and playing an E chord on each simultaneously. Together on cue Lennon, Starr, McCartney and assistant Mal Evans hammered the keys on the assembled pianos and held the chord. The sound from the pianos was then mixed up with compression and increasing gain on the volume to draw out the sound to maximum sustain.....
The opening track of side two, "Within You Without You", is unusually long for a 'pop' recording of the day, and features only George Harrison, on vocals, sitar and acoustic guitar, with all other instruments being played by a group of London-based Indian musicians.....
So here's your homework....turn off the TV, Silence the Iphone, and listen to Sgt Peppers from start to finish! Enjoy the journey !
John & George RIP

This Edition we are gonna take a look at Duran Duran! To some a big influence in the early "new romantic" phase of new wave...to others a fluffy MTV Video Band ....
I tend to look past "Hungry Like the Wolf" , "Save A Prayer", "Union of the Snake" etc and like to look at their more sincere music , that while it didnt get the airplay, it showed they definately had an influence on "Attic Alternative"
Lil History...The Band was formed by Keyboardist Nick Rhodes and Guitarist John Taylor in Birmingham, England in 1978...later adding drummer Roger Taylor, then guitarist Andy Taylor .... When Andy joined John traded in his guitar for a Bass Guitar. Simon LeBon joined last after a few lead singers came and went.....
The bands first album...known for "Girls On Film" featured several really good new wave tunes including "Sounds of Thunder", "Friends Of Mine" , "Careless Memories" and "Tel Aviv" ... the first album had a much more raw sound to it then its follow-up "Rio" which of course began the MTV craze...but even Rio had several unknown tunes including one of their best
"The Chauffeur" .... download that one for sure.....
"Seven and the Ragged Tiger" Followed and "Arena" .... this was the height of the Duran craze. There is a good dvd "Sing Blue Silver" that showed the band on tour during this period, whats cool is you see them for musicians...not jus video makers.
It was at this point the band showed signs of stress, John and Andy Taylor went off to do their solo project "Powerstation" while Nick and Simon formed "Arcadia" ... cool tune from Arcadia is "Election Day" check it out .... After this point Roger and Andy Taylor left the group...leaving Nick, John and Simon to carry on the Duran name, recording several albums but never totally regaining the Duran craze .... but partly because their audience grew older. The band reformed for a reunion album "Astronaut" and Tour in 2004...Andy left again after that , but the four other original members remain in the group to this day...releasing "Red Carpet Massacre" in 2007 and a new album due out in 2011 , entitled " All You Need Is Now"
Duran did the theme for the James Bond movie "A View To A Kill" in 1985...to this date it's the only Bond Theme that reached #1 on the billboard hot 100....FYI its the Bond flick that featured Christopher Walken !
Wanna give you some Duran tunes you should download and give a listen to .... "Ordinary World" , "Come Undone" , "Serious", "All She Wants Is" , "Playing with Uranium" , "She's Too Much"
There is also an edition of MTV-Unplugged that featured Duran and they sound really good in an acoustic setting! Once again showing a different side to them....and highlighting them as musicians, not glam guys
My " 3 "
"Duran Duran"
"Wedding Album"
"Rio"

Talking Heads
" THIS AIN'T NO PARTY !, THIS AIN'T NO DISCO ! "
My memories of the Talking Heads....there was'nt a party that you attended in the 80's where you didnt hear "Burning Down The House" it was jus part of the scene.
The Talking Heads I compare to the B-52's , however both went in different directions ... The Talking Heads more serious, the B-52's more Light Hearted....but I'll get back to that in a monment , first lets look at the band....
The Talking Heads formed in 1974 in New York City ...and remained active until 1991. The band comprised of David Byrne ( Vocals/Guitar ) , Chris Frantz ( Drums ) , Tina Weymouth ( Bass ) and Jery Harrison ( Guitars/Keyboards ).
David Byrne, Chris Frantz and Tina Weymouth were alumni of the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, Rhose Island. There Byrne and Frantz formed a band called "The Artistics" in 1974. Weymouth was Frantz's girlfriend and often provided the band with transportation. The Artistics dissolved within a year, and the three moved to New York, eventually sharing an apartment. Unable to find a bass player in New York City, Frantz encouraged Weymouth to learn to play bass by listening to Suzi Quatro albums. They played their first gig as "Talking Heads" opening for the Ramones at CBGB on June 8, 1975......
Getting back to my comparision between the Talking Heads & B-52's ... there are alot similiarities like ... Dramatic "Front Men" David Brynes was always a very "eclectic" character. The use of female members, breaking the traditional "all male" line-ups formula and both bands use of art-rock or art-punk sounds.
The Talking Heads first album came in 1977 and was titled "77" ... it featured the hit "Psycho Killer" ...... In his 1995 book, "The Alternative Music Almanac", Alan Cross placed the album in the #5 spot on the list of '10 Classic Alternative Albums'.
In 1978 they released their 2nd album "More Songs About Buildings and Food" featuring "Take Me To The River"
After releasing four albums in barely four years, the group went into hiatus and nearly three years passed before their next release, although Frantz and Weymouth continued to record with the Tom Tom Club. In the meantime, Talking Heads released a live album, "The Name of This Band Is Talking Heads" , toured the US and Europe as an eight-piece group, and parted ways with Eno, who went on to produce albums with U2.
1983 saw the release of "Speaking In Tongues" which featured the Hit "Burning Down The House"
1985 they released "Little Creatures" with hits "And She Was" ( personal fav ) & "Road to Nowehere"
In a later interview, Weymouth recalled how the group chose the name Talking Heads: "A friend had found the name in the TV Guide, which explained the term used by TV studios to describe a head-and-shoulder shot of a person talking as 'all content, no action.' It fit."
My " 3 "
" 77 "
"Speaking In Tongues"
"Little Creature"
The band played "Life During Wartime", "Psycho Killer" and "Burning Down the House" together on March 18, 2002, at the ceremony of their induction into the "Rock & Roll Hall of Fame" , however reuniting for a concert tour is unlikely. David Bryne states: "We did have a lot of bad blood go down. That's one reason, and another is that musically we're just miles apart." Weymouth has been critical of David Byrne, describing him as "a man incapable of returning friendship"and that he doesn't "love" her, Frantz, and Harrison.
Side Note ..... Chris Frantz and Tina Weymouth, who were married in 1977, recorded on the side as "Tom Tom Club" beginning in 1981.
I think a great word for "Talking Heads" is " Art-Rock / Punk " Their albums sounded it , their concerts showed it!
This addition of Attic Alt gonna look at "The Alarm" and when I do, I think of Revolutionary War Themes lol! Im sure I am not alone....listening to their music or seeing them, you cant help but get that impression.
The Band is Mike Peters - Lead Vocals, Dave Sharp - Guitars, Eddie MacDonald - Bass and Nigel Twist - Drums.
Lets look at a little History of the group.....the Alarm formed in Rhyl, Wales in 1977.....The Alarm played their first gig at The Victoria Hotel, Prestatyn, North Wales on 10 June 1981, opening with "Shout to the Devil", which would later appear on "Declaration" The Groups first release as an "EP" Entitled "The Alarm" in 1983 and featured " The Stand "
The Alarm began gaining popularity as an opening act for U2 and in 1984 released its best known project "Declaration" which featured " 68 Guns " , "Blaze of Glory " , "Shout at the Devil " ..... and more. I think if you were asked to grab one peice of work to get a "feel" for the Alarm....this would be it ! "Declaration"
The follow up "Strength" ( 1985 ) featured "Spirit of 76'" followed by "Eye of the Hurricane" ( 1987 ) which featured "Rain in the Summertime" , "Rescue Me " and "Presence of Love" after the release of "Eye" the Alarm toured with Bob Dylan before returning to the studio in 1989 for "Change" which many say was a tribute to their roots in Wales. "Change" had hits like "Sold Me Down The River" .... a really good tune and "A New South Wales" and "Love Don't Come Easy" 1991 saw the release of their final album "Raw" which only really had the title track released as a single.....it was after "Raw" the end came.
The end of the "Original" Alarm came on stage at Brixton Academy when Mike Peters announced on-stage, he was leaving ....a surprise to all! " We've shared some great moments in time over the last ten years and tonight I would like to thank all the people who have supported me from the beginning to the end. Tonight this is my last moment with the Alarm, I'm going out in a Blaze of Glory - my hands are held up high! " and he walked of stage .......
Following that other band members went on their own. Dave Sharp formed "AOR - Spirit of the Alarm" As of late Mike Peters has used the name "the Alarm" to tour and record ....using other backing musicians. This year he released the album "Direct Action"
You can find out more about the band at their website www.thealarm.com
In the end the Alarm had its voice and their "5" Studio Albums are strong and deserve a spot on your Ipod ... even if its the greatest hits collection..... Now lets head out in a Blaze of Glory!

For this addition lets have some fun! Madness, a band which I consider an "OFF-BEAT" & "QUIRKY" Band !
Madness has always had a great following in the U.K. , but here in the States known for its most popular two songs "Our House" made famous by the MTV Video and "It Must Be Love" ...
Madness to me is the kind of Band your looking for if you just wanna relax and not think! Now that sounds bad, but I think even they would admit that there's nothing "deep" and "political" about their music. But the blend pop-ska-reggae and alternative sounds to make them worth being in "the Attic"
Lets give ya alil History about Madness....Madness are a British band from Camden Town, London, that formed in 1976.
The Line-Up Includes....
Graham McPherson – Lead Vocals, tambourine, Piano, Percussion and occasional guitars.
Mike Barson – Keyboards, Pianos, backing vocals, percussion
Chris Foreman – Lead Guitarist, Guitar.
Mark Bedford – Bass Guitar.
Daniel Woodgate – Drums, Percussion.
The Group to me is like a "Tale of Two Bands" One which could produce mainstream hits and the other an outrageous blend of ska and reggae and madness!
Here are some songs I recommend for the "Outrageous" side... "One Step Beyond", "Baggy Trousers", "Calling Cards", "In the Middle of the Night" and "Sorry"
My picks for their mainstream hits to download.... "Our House" , "It Must Be Love" ( My personal fav ) , "The Sun and The Rain" , "Bed and Breakfast Man", and "Grey Day"
My "3"
Madness
One Step Beyond
Total Madness
There is also a Box Set if you really dig their sound "The Business"
Madness is fun, dont expect it to be nothing else...jus good fun and alot of style blending. Fire them up on your Ipod when you need a pick-me-up!
Check out their famous MTV Video for "Our House" ...have fun ~ Jersey Shore Trick ;^)
Ok bare with me....I was watching the Superbowl ( Damn Colts ! ) and so enjoyed the Who at halftime when I thought about what may be my favorite Who album "Quadrophenia" and what an "Alternative" project that was for them...so this edition of Attic Alternative will not feature an overview of a "Groups" work, but a "Classic Piece" .... so sit back and enjoy as we stroll through QUADROPHENIA! Hey Mods - Rockers... BEHAVE!
Lets set the stage......Quadrophenia was released October 19th of 1973...However this "Rock Opera" is set in London/Brighton, England in 1964 - 1965...and deals with the problems of a troubled youth...follow ?
This I didnt know....The name is a variation on the popular usage of the medical diagnostic term schizophtrenia as dissociative identity disorder to reflect the four distinct personalities of Jimmy, the opera's protagonist—each said to represent the personality of one member of the Who.....Pete Townshend, Roger Daltry, John Enthwhistle and Keith Moon... Townshend noted in 2009 that, rather than Jimmy’s personalities representing a Who member, he chose the personalities of each member to illustrate each of Jimmy’s four personalities, or “personality extremes” or mood swings...still follow ?
To me this album has a certain "real" feel to it. "Tommy" the Who's first "Rock Opera" had its complexities, but also had some humor and variety ..."Quad" is on the streets, it never deviates and leaves you amongst the troublesome youth of mid 60's London.
There are two struggles going on ... Jimmy's own self doubt and the battle between rival gangs the Mods and the Rockers, which has a certain " West Side Story " feel or maybe the "Capulets and Montagues" ala " Romeo and Juliet "
The Main Character "Jimmy " suffers from split personalities and how he deals with it through a series of conflicts along with drug and alcohol abuse ....
Not to ruin the end, but it is a lonely , desperate and sad end ... featured in the songs "the Rock/Love, Reign O'er Me" where Jimmy finds himself finally resolved to know who he is " himself " a lesson every teenager dreads! Only problem is Jimmy is on a rock in the middle of the Ocean :( when he makes this discovery! Not a good place to be .. sorry Jimmy .....
Here's what I want you to do... get your hands on a copy of Quadrophenia, set aside some time and listen! here's a breakdown of the opera by songs and their relationship to the story....
"I Am the Sea/The Real Me" – The opera opens with Jimmy Cooper's introduction with his four personalities. We then get a quick look at his visits to a psychiatrist, his mother and even the local vicar. Mental security is unfortunately not obtained by the protagonist.
"Quadrophenia/Cut My Hair" – Jimmy recalls an argument with his folks that culminated in his leaving home. We also hear a news broadcast mentioning riots in Brighton between the Mods and the Rockers, events at which he was present the previous week.
"The Punk and the Godfather" – Jimmy goes to a rock concert ( the Who themselves, as shown as a clip of "the Kids Are Alright" is played). He queues up, pays his money and then decides he is going to see the band backstage as they come out the stage door. Sadly, the group is rude to him. He realises that there's nothing really happening in rock & roll; it's just another thing in his life which has let him down.
"I'm One" – Jimmy contemplates how he hasn't really got much going for him, but at least he has the Mod lifestyle.
"The Dirty Jobs" – Suitably disenchanted with his former "religion", he gets a job as a dustman. Unfortunately, his extremely left-wing views are not appreciated by his work mates and he is forced to pass on to greater things.
"Helpless Dancer/Is It in My Head?" – We get a real look at where Jimmy's aggression comes from, as he switches into one of his multiple personalities (The Tough Guy). Jimmy has a conscience that bites fairly deep. His frustration with the world only makes him angrier than he already is. We see that he also possesses self doubt; he worries about his own part, and feels that his outlook is clouded by pessimism.
"I've Had Enough" – Jimmy finally snaps when he sees the girl he likes with one of his friends. In a desperately self-destructive state, he smashes up his scooter and decides to go to Brighton where he had such a good time with his friends chasing Rockers the week before (as recited through the news broadcast earlier in the story).
"5:15" – This song recites Jimmy's train journey down to Brighton, sandwiched between two city gents and notable for the rather absurd number of amphetamines he consumes in order to pass the time. He goes through a not entirely pleasant series of ups and downs as he contemplates the gaudier side of life as a teenager.
"Sea and Sand/Drowned" – Arriving at Brighton, Jimmy's mood heightens. He talks about the rows at home and is a little sarcastic as he recalls the evening on the beach with his former girlfriend. The Mod scene is already falling apart and all he can do is stay in Brighton just to remember the days when the Mods came to Brighton; it was only three weeks ago, but he's already living in the past. It is here that Jimmy contemplates killing himself by drowning in the water.
"Bell Boy" – He meets a former Ace Face who now holds the position as a bell boy at the very hotel the Mods tore up. He looks on Jimmy with a mixture of pity and contempt. The two argue, as Jimmy feels the Ace Face has "sold out". Jimmy is now feeling that everything—even the Mod lifestyle—has let him down.
"Doctor Jimmy" – Jimmy begins to damage himself so badly on drugs and alcohol that he gets to the point where he's so desperate that he'll take a closer look at himself. This part of the story shows the lunatic within him. The chorus line "Doctor Jimmy and Mr. Jim" is an ambiguous reference to "Doctor Jekyll and Mr. Hyde", which closely links to the multiple personality theme running through the story.
"The Rock/Love, Reign O'er Me" – Jimmy steals a boat and takes it to a rock in the middle of the sea. Here, when he comes down off his high, he finds the boat has drifted away and that he is now stranded, alone and forgotten. As a storm rages around him, Jimmy has an epiphany. After all the different people he's been, he finally knows for sure who he is: himself.
Pete Townshend went on to say later "Quadrophenia" is ....
"The best music that I've ever written, I think, and it's the best album that I will ever write."
For fans looking for an "Alternative" to the every day "Album" sit back and absorb "Quadrophenia" as it blends music and story telling into a CLASSIC!
A side Note... "Quadrophenia" the Movie was released in 1979 and featured a young "Sting" as Ace Face! Rental ?
The Kinks

This edition is going to be called "Classic Attic" ...so without further delay let me introduce Ray & Dave Davies, Peter Quaife, and Mick Avory...The Kinks!
The Kinks In my opinion may be the World's first Alternative/Rock Band to come out of the "British Invasion". That said of course the Beatles paved the way, but the Kinks just had a different sound that seperated them from the Stones. I always thought the Kinks almost had a "sense of humor" when it came to song writing.
The Kinks were formed by the Davies' ( Yes Brothers Ray & Dave ) in Muswell Hill, North London in 1964. The Kinks first single hit vinyl in 1964 a cover of Little Richards "Long Tall Sally" ...which was ignored. Their second single "You Still Want Me" also failed and their record label "Pye Records" was on the verge of dropping the group when their 3rd single "You Really Got Me" hit Londons Streets and along with an appearance on the TV Show "Ready Steady Go!" shot to # 1 and the rest is History!
Ok let me deviate for a moment ... its June 19th 1982 and I'm in Philadelphia and I'm getting to see the Kinks for the first, and sadly , only time...It was at JFK Stadium ( demolished in 1992 ) an interesting line-up! Opening a local band "the Hooters" followed by a new band we hadnt really heard of "Huey Lewis and the News" after which came "Joan Jett and the Blackhearts" followed by "Loverboy" , "Foreigner" and the Kinks. Interesting note about the show...Ray Davies was dating Chrissy Hynde of the "Pretenders" and she was in Philly that day and came out for a portion of the show and performed ...made for a nice day long memory with the Kinks!
This is an " actual " picture I took in 1982 , yes way before Iphone's & digital cameras.....but there it is as we watched the concert at JFK June 16th , 1982! and yes this picture was literally in my "Attic" lol
Another Kinks memory was when I was in Hollywood 2 years ago. If your a fan of the Kinks you know the song "Celluloid Hereos" and well as I drove down Hollywood Blvd I couldnt help recite this song in my head .... "Their Names Are Written in Concrete" Oh and by the way Hollywood Blvd is very overated lol
Some of my favorite Kinks tunes ... Victoria, All Day and All of the Night, Celluloid Heroes, Where have all the good times gone, Apeman, Lola, Low Budget and a goofy fun song David Watts.....
If you want to get to know the Kinks Early Music....get "the Singles Collection"
My " 3 "
The Kink Kontroversy

Low Budget
Well their you go some thoughts and memories of an "Attic Classic" and although they aren't together anymore, gave their last perfomance together in 1996, their music lives on .... looking for a great "road-trip" cd get "One for the Road" great live/best of CD!
Stephen Thomas Erlewine called The Kinks "one of the most influential bands of the British Invasion," and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame website states that "Ray Davies is almost indisputably rock's most literate, witty and insightful songwriter. Dave Davies, on the other hand, is renowned for his guitar playing ... [with a] pioneering hard-rock style." Neville Martin and Jeff Hudson: "The Kinks have been one of the most creative, most volatile[,] and longest-running bands to emerge from the '60s, ahead of even The Beatles ... and eclipsing the stones on musical talent."
Ok at first you think “Simple Minds” you say didn't they do that song from the “Breakfast Club” well yes “Don't You Forget About Me” but this Band from Scotland has much more substance then that song. Now don't get me wrong “Don't You” was a huge hit for them and was part of an Iconic 80's film.... but my pick for best song is “Belfast Child” of course a center of political and citizen uprest in Northern Ireland , the song makes a point and has the feel of the City. By the way, Belfast means “Mouth of the Sandbars” ..... in case your ever looking for trivia!
OK back to the song....if you search the web you can find a great 'Live” version of “Belfast Child” with Simple Minds & U2 performing! This song puts you in Belfast .... A must for your Ipod! Bono was quoted once in the Simple Minds Biography “The Race Is The Prize” as saying they are “Glorious Noise”
Lets give some background on the Band....Vocalist Jim Kerr and Guitarist Charlie Burchill formed the band in 1977 as a “punk” band....Simple Minds also features Drummer Mel Gaynor, Andy Gillespie on Keyboards and Eddie Duffy on Bass Guitar.....They hail from Glasgow Scotland ....
Back to music.... another politically motivated song, like "Belfast Child", is “Mandela Day” a song about South African Leader Nelson Mandela. In 2008 they played a live concert for Mandela's 90th Birthday in London's Hyde Park and celebrated their 30th Anniversary....Another politically motivated song was their version of Peter Gabriels “Biko” which centered on Steve Biko a noted black South African anti-apartheid activist. You can find Biko, Belfast Child and Mandela Day on their “Street Fighting Years” Album from 1989.
What makes Simple Minds interesting is their “ two” sides. One is the more main stream , with albums like “Once Upon A Time” and songs like “Don't You Forget About Me” and the other more Political with their work with Amnesty International and Albums like “Street Fighting Years” so if download their greatest hits you go from dancing to thinking .. all in one sitting, imagine that!
My "3"
Street Fighting Years ( 1989 )
Once Upon A Time ( 1985 )
Sparkle In the Rain ( 1984 )
BTW “Don't You Forget About Me” never appeared on a Simple Minds Studio Album,Only the “Breakfast Club” Soundtrack and “Greatest Hits/Live” Albums
iPod Song Download recommendations ...
“Waterfront” , “Ghost Dancing” , “Alive and Kicking” , “Theme For Great Cities” , “Sanctify Yourself”and “Up On The Catwalk”
One of the Bands I enjoyed growing up was the Australian Band INXS. One of the best imports from “Down-Under” during the 80's! However a career cut short by thew death of their lead singer Michael
Hutchence...who died in 1997.
INXS was originally Called “Doctor Dolphin” Circa 1977...the Band appeared as “INXS” for the first time in September of 1979.
The bands line-up consisted of Michael Hutchence, Garry Beers, Andrew Farriss, Jon Farriss, Tim Farriss and Kirk Pengilly.....
INXS' first Album was “INXS” in 1980 , but was not available Internationally until 1984...featured the single “Just Keep Walking” which got to # 38 on the Aussie Charts !
First Success for INXS came with their 3rd Album “Shabooh Shoobah” in 1982 which featured the single “The One Thing” They continued their move into the spotlight with their 1984 release “The Swing” with the hit “Original Sin”
In 1985 INXS dropped their 5th Album “Listen like Thieves” which is considered their “break-out album” with the hits “What You Need”, “Listen like Thieves”, and “Kiss the Dirt”
1987 INXS landed with their best selling album to date “Kick” with multiple hits “Devil Inside”, “New Sensation”, “Guns In the Sky”, “Need You Tonight”, “Mediate” and “Never Tear Us Apart”
INXS released “ X “ in 1990 and featured my personal favorite INXS tune “The Stairs” Check it out, its a great song ......
INXS' last album with Michael Hutchence , before his death, came in April of 1997 “Elegantly Wasted” ... INXS has done one album since his death .... “Switch” in 2005.
Wow where do we begin....born Declan Patrick MacManus, in England. He came to prominence as an early participant in London's Pub rock scene in the mid-1970s, and later became associated with the punk and new wave musical genres. Costello's lyrics are broader than that of most popular songs, and his music has drawn on many diverse genres; the critic Stephen Thomas Erlewine describes Elvis as a "pop encyclopedia," able to "reinvent the past in his own image".
Ok first let me say when I first started hearing about Elvis I didnt like him....for too reasons. His name "Elvis" and his look "Buddy Holly" it just seemed dated to me at the time.....that said I now admire him for being a musical "Icon" and a big part of the Alternative Scene in the 80's !
Elvis' debut Album "My Aim Is True" came out in 1976 and was Produced by Nick Lowe. It featured classics like "Allison" and "Less than Zero"
In 2003, VH1 named My Aim Is True the 80th greatest album of all time. In 2003, the album was ranked number 168 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All-Time.
"This Years Model" was his Second Release , First with the Attractions, featuring his Hit "Pump It Up" ... which most probably credit as their first Elvis tune the bought lol It was voted the best album of the year in the "Village Voice' critics poll.
Other Elvis Costello hits include Oliver's Army, Accidents Will Happen, Everyday I Write The Book, I Dont Want To Go To Chelsea, Watching the Detectives, and Peace Love and Understanding....
My fav tune " Veronica" comes from the "Spike" album ( 1989 ) which Elvis Co-Wrote with Paul McCartney. The song was inspired by his Grandmother who battled Alzheimer's Disease....really touching video was shot for this song!
When I look at Elvis' body of work now, you see why he is so highly regarded....he has worked in so many styles... R&B, Rock, Country, Classical, Punk, New Wave.....He has done it all and worked with so many of musics best !
Ok I watched Cheap Trick on the Tonight Show with Conan O Brien this week and said ITS TIME ….. Time to give alil respect to a band whose heading to 40 years together and still has its original parts! Robin Zander, Rick Neilsen, Tom Petersson and Bun E. Carlos are Cheap Trick and have definately left their mark on todays alternative scene! In fact many bands today credit their work for inspiring them.
The debut album” Cheap Trick ” had a raw edge and sound that was definately new to listeners in 1977…. With songs like Taxman, He’s A Whore, Ello Kiddies and Oh Candy…their first album is a fantastic alternative listen! Next time you want a good helping of Cheap Trick…play the debut from start to finish!
I think what made Cheap Trick stand out was their sound. They never strayed from it and have mastered it over time. Neilsen on lead guitar, Petersson on the 12 string bass, Bun E. on the drums and Robins voice…..Zander in my opinion has one of the best voices in the past 30 years of Rock!
Ok lets pick out some of their best tunes I want you to download! Yes we all know “I Want You To Want Me”, “Surrender”, “Dream Police”, “The Flame”, etc but here’s my “Attic” Favs:
Your All Talk - from “In Color”

Heaven Tonight & Auf Wiedersehen - from “Heaven Tonight”
Gonna Raise Hell - from “Dream Police”
Tonight It’s You - from “Standing on the Edge”
If you never saw “Heavy Metal” the Animated Film, check it out! and download the two Cheap Trick songs from it! “Imust Be Dreamin” and “Reach Out” they are both awesome tunes and on my favs list!
3 Underated albums worth having …. Cheap Trick ( 1997 ) , Woke Up with A Monster, and Rockford……
Currently Cheap Trick has a new CD out “the Latest” and it’s really good! “Sick Man Of Europe”, “These Days”, and my fav “Everybody Knows” it jus came out recently and your can get more info on their website www.cheaptrick.com

The Fixx
Ok so I was going through my music folder and I stumbled across ” The Fixx” and thought hmmm ya they did make a mark back in the 80’s with albums like “Reach the Beach” and “Phantoms”.
The Fixx were formed in 1980 in London by college friends Cy Curnin on vocals and Adam Woods on drums, originally under the name “The Portraits”. The pair placed an ad for additional members. As a result, guitarist Jamie West-Oram, keyboardist Rupert Greenall, and bassist Charlie Barret joined, and the band changed their name to “The Fixx”.
The Fixx have a unique sound largely in part to Cy Curnin’s vocals. They were the type of you didnt have a face to recognize, but the songs were …. “One Thing Leads To Another” “Saved By Zero” “Red Skies” etc
I dont think the Fixx were a “statement” alternative band, but a band with an alternative sound…If that makes sense lol
One of my favorite songs is “Are We Ourselves” from Phantoms!
I dont think you can look back at growing up in the 80’s and not remembering the Fixx as one of the leaders through the alternative/new wave explosion! If your not familiar or forgot…give them a listen and you’ll see why…..get a good FIXX !
The band regularly tour the U.S., and recently celebrated 25 years of making music together, accompanied by the release of the 2 CD set 25th Anniversary Anthology compilation. Cy Curnin can often be found on stage with a glass of wine in his right hand and an egg shaker in the left. The Fixx are currently recording their long awaited 9th studio album due for release sometime this year!

Ok now before you say ” The Cars! ” Let me say that when they debuted they threw “alternative” music into the publics ears. I remember being in California and hearing my friends…. sisters, 8 track of their debut album ( the cars ) and saying WOW what the hell is that ! ( Moving In Stereo ) The Cars had a completely different sound and they had it down!
Now that being said, The Cars debut was great….the follow-up ( Candy-O ) was great and their 3rd project , maybe my favorite…was great ( Panorama ) ….. then they fell apart like a Hyundai on the Garden State Parkway ! ( Yes I Used an Automobile Reference… Deal lol ) Opting for more Pop-Friendly Music….It was popular, but not near the Alternative edge they had in the beginning of their career.
The Cars best album in my opinion was their 3rd “Panorama” released in 1980… but critics disliked it because it was “to off-beat” and didnt hit main stream rock fans, but I think thats why I liked it best….songs like “Running To You”, “Touch and Go” , “Misfit Kids” , “Down Boys”, and ”Panorama” all great Cars tracks! Get your hands on Panorama and give it a listen, you’ll enjoy!
After their 3rd album the Cars lost their edge and finally broke up in February of 1988…Ben Orr the groups Bass Player and the “Other” Lead Singer died of complications due to cancer in 2000.
Some of the original members along with Todd Rundgren formed the “New Cars” in 2005……

Welcome to our second addition, Im featuring XTC. One Thing I think you’ll notice about this band is their unique vocals from Andy Partridge and Colin Moulding …give them a listen and you’ll either love or hate their sound, I loved it and wanted to share this English band with you. Other members included Terry Chambers, Barry Andrews and Dave Gregory. XTC was signed by Virgin Records in 1977 and their first album “White Music” hit record stores in 1978.
I think XTC was one of those bands that never got that big hit or video here in the States and thus left them more of an underground group. I liked XTC because they could have a more “New Wave Pop” sound with songs like “Generals & Majors” or “Mayor of Simpleton” to much deeper social statements like “Dear God” . I think XTC is an “Album” Band, like you dont jus wanna hear their “Greatest Hits” you want to hear albums from beginning to end …….
One thing that sucked for XTC was front man Andy Partridges’ “Stage Fright” … In fact it was such a problem for him it basically left XTC a “Studio” band and not a lot of touring, which was a shame because as you know “live” is a great music experience….
I think XTC is worth a try, and maybe you’ll add them as a new group in your music folder!
Couple of my fav singles…”King For A Day” “Ballad of Peter Pumpkinhead” “Senses Working Overtime”
Wow…memories!

Welcome to “Attic Alternative!” I guess it’s a good idea to look back at the music and groups and artists that are responsible for the music you love today….and who knows maybe turn you on to some new material for your music folders!
It was tough to say ok whose first, there’s no real clear cut line as to who the Grandfather or Grandma of Alternative Music is. Some might argue Neil Young might be “Grandfather Grunge” or Debra Harry or Bjork “Grandma” or that R.E.M. led the way of American Alternative Bands of the 80’s … So please don’t look any further into who we feature each addition…other than a new “featured act”
This addition we Feature “the Clash” ….The Clash were an English punk band that formed in 1976 as part of the original wave of British punk rock. Along with punk rock, they experimented with reggae, ska, dub, funk, rap and rockabilly. For most of their recording career, The Clash consisted of Joe Strummer (lead vocals, rhythm guitar), Mick Jones (lead guitar, vocals), Paul Simonon (bass, backing vocals, occasional lead vocals) and Nicky “Topper” Headon (drums, percussion). Headon left the group in 1982, and internal friction led to Jones’s departure the following year. The group continued with new members, but finally disbanded in 1986……
The Clash were a mix of edgy sounds and leftist politics. So give them a listen you’ll dig their beat, but may find their thoughts intriguing as well.
My ” 3”
“London Calling” - The album has become widely accepted as one of the greatest rock albums of all time. Rolling Stone magazine ranked London Calling at number one on its 1989 list of the 100 Best Albums of the Eighties despite its 1979 release
” Sandinista” - voted the best album of the year 1980 in The Village Voice’s Pazz & Jop critics poll, and it was ranked number 404 on Rolling Stone magazine’s 2003 list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.
“Combat Rock” - Features “Should I Stay Or Should I Go” & “Rock the Casbah”
